Precision Optical Rail

Custom Systems Page

This 48" optical rail was designed and built for extremely precise coaxial alignment of optical components. It is shown in the horizontal position on a structural wooden desk. It rotates easily on a central pivot pin and locks into a vertical position when required . The 15" rail mounts at right angles to the main rail and holds and aligns other systems axially with the main rail. (See Custom Illumination System) The accuracy of any point to any other point on either rails’ dovetails is 0.0001" or 2.5 microns.

Both rails are made of meehanite, the most dimensionally stable form of cast iron. They are stress relieved after casting and again before finish machining, to maintain lasting accuracy. Each rail has a central wide dovetail and two smaller side dovetails that are rotated 30 degrees. Optics and accessories are mounted on precision slider blocks (meehanite, not shown) that can be repositioned and moved linearly while maintaining optical centering and precise alignment.
