Stages in contrast enhancement

Stages in contrast enhancement using the VE-DIC method to image unstained microtubules assembled from pure tubulin subunits.

  1. View by eye of microtubules bound to the surface of a coverslip.

  2. Live video image after analog contrast enhancement.

  3. Background image taken just below microtubule focus.

  4. Live video image after subtraction of background image (stored in a frame
    buffer).

  5. Live video image after further digital contrast enhancement.
